Environment
The OECD Environmental Strategy summarises the policy commitments which members have signed up to – mostly in other fora or nationally. The commitments are arranged under 5 objectives:
Objective 1: Maintaining the integrity of ecosystems (climate, freshwater and biodiversity).
Objective 2: Decoupling environmental pressures from economic growth (agriculture, transport and energy).
Objective 3: Improving information for decision making (e.g. indicators).
Objective 4: The social and environmental interface: enhancing the quality of life.
Objective 5: Global environmental interdependence: improving governance and co-operation.
The UK fully supports the work of the Round Table on Sustainable Development, chaired by the former French Environment Minister Brice Lalonde. The UK is an active proponent of across government policy coherence on sustainable development themes.
Some examples of where the OECD’s work has been of value are;
- Developing environmental principles and frameworks such as the Polluter Pays and User Pays principles.
- Supporting international environmental negotiations, for example by hosting the Experts Group for the UN Climate Change Convention.
