Science, technology & industry

Of special importance in 2008 will be the Ministerial meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy.

The UK takes much interest in this OECD work.  In January 2004 the OECD hosted a meeting of Science Ministers in Paris.  Its key conclusions included the drawing up of guidelines giving access to public sector research data and the human resource aspects of studies and careers in science.

Of special importance in 2008 will be the Ministerial meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy. The UK is keen that this should promote greater and freer access to the Internet and is working closely with the OECD Secretariat and other Member States to ensure that the Declaration that Ministers will sign, and the initiatives that stem from it, reflect these objectives.

A major current initiative is the Innovation Strategy, led by this Directorate, which will draw on examples of innovation across the widest possible range of activities. This is of great interest to the UK, which views science and innovation in enterprise as being vital in achieving the government’s key economic goal of driving productivity.

OECD work on biotechnology, nanotechnology and counterfeiting and anti-piracy, all of which the UK supports, are also taken forward in this Directorate. Recent important outputs by the OECD in science and technology include the Science and Technology Scoreboard, the Communications Outlook 2007 and the Phase One Report on Counterfeiting and Piracy.
